It is an area of Newport Beach, California comprising three islands in one of the nationʼs most active harbors

Today the Newport Harbor covers 880 acres, 9,900 boats & 1200 moorings

Originally Balboa Island was little more than a mudflat surrounded by swampland, and our harbor emerged only after dredging millions of tons of silt

In the late 1860s, James McFadden and his brother, Robert, bought a large portion of the future site of Newport

In 1902, James McFadden sold all of his Newport property to William S. Collins and C. A. Hanson for an undisclosed amount, suspected to be $35,000 with $5,000 down

1908 and 1909, Collins moved his small dredge to the eastern part of the Newport bay, a mud flat called "Snipe Island." Piling the sand and silt up on the mud flat, Balboa Island was born.
